Ain't Nothing Wrong with being Beautiful

Introduction

Toddler and child beauty pageants have been held around the world in their modern form since the 1960s. Their characteristics and style are very much a function of geography and social statute. Ain't Nothing Wrong follows the behind-the-scenes industry of child beauty pageants in the American south. The child pageants mimic very closely the way adult pageants are conducted where the winner is a fake-tanned, heavily makeupped adult-looking version of an adult beauty ideal.

In this project I accompanied the Elliott's of Houston, Texas during competition weekends. Their 9-year-old daughter Mehayle has been participating in these pageants since the age of 4. During the photo shoots I experienced with Mehayle the routine that is required of a pageant participant. I also documented the active participation of the “pageant moms”, most of whom are former participants of pageants themselves.

תחרויות יופי לילדות ולפעוטות מתקיימות בצורתן המודרנית מאז 1960 במקומות שונים בעולם. אופי וסגנון התחרויות משתנה לפי המקום הגאוגרפי והמעמד הסוציאלי. Ain't nothing wrong עוקבת אחרי התעשייה שעומדת מאחורי תחרויות יופי לילדות בדרום ארה"ב. התחרויות מתנהלות באופן דומה לתחרויות יופי לנערות ובוגרות, כשמטרתן לבחור ילדה שמייצגת אידאלי יופי בוגר, המאופיין באיפור כבד, תוספות שיער ושיזוף מלאכותי.

בפרויקט ליוויתי בצילומים את משפחת אליוט מפרברי יוסטון, טקסס במהלך סוף שבוע אופייני של תחרויות. בתם בת ה-9 מהיילי מתחרה בתחרויות אלו מאז היתה בת 4. במהלך הצילומים חווית את שגרת חייה הסובבת תחרויות אלו. כמו כן תיעדתי את המעורבות האקטיבית של האמהות לאורך התחרויות (אשר מרביתן הן מתחרות לשעבר בתחרויות כאלו).

The project

The project consists of both still and video photography.

The video is a diptych which concentrates on the ‘pageant moms’ involvement during the shows. The right hand side features videos from the pageants in Texas in which girls dance in front of the judges to instructions given by moms and coaches behind the judges’ backs. The left side is a staged video of an adult dancer which acts as a contrast to the video on the right. In it, the dancer sheds off objects which the girls wear.

The still photographs are divided into three parts: The first part is dedicated to the girls’ rigorous preparations to the shows. The second part concentrates on the pageants themselves; this includes both on-stage performance photos and a triptych of the winners crowning ceremony. The last part is comprised of portraits that try the capture the essence of mundane suburban life in the American south.

הפרויקט מורכב מצילומי סטילס ווידאו.

הוידאו הינו דיפטיך אשר מתרכז במעורבות האמהות ("Pageant Moms") במהלך התחרות. מימין מופיעים קטעי וידאו מהתחרות במארשל טקסס, בו ילדות רוקדות אל מול השופטים לפי הנחיות הניתנות מאחורי גבם של השופטים ע"י האמהות והמאמנים. משמאל וידאו מבוים של רקדנית בוגרת, אשר מהווה נגטיב לסרטון מימין. הרקדנית המופיע בו מתנערת מהאובייקטים שהבנות עונדות.

צילומי הסטליס מחולקים לשלושה חלקים: החלק הראשון מוקדש להכנות הקדחתניות של הילדות לתחרויות. החלק השני מתרכז בתחרויות עצמן ומכיל צילומים של הבנות מהתחרויות, וטריפטיך "הכתרות" שבו מוצגות שלוש ילדות וכספי זכיתן. החלק האחרון מורכב מדיוקנאות המנסים לזקק את תמצית היום יומיות אשר חוות ילדות אלה בפרברי דרום ארה"ב. הצילומים מנסים לצייר תמונה מלאה ומורכבת של חיי הילדות הצעירות.

Exhibitions and screenings

Stils from the project were exhibited in selective group exhibitions around the globe. The video art portion of the project was screened in film and video festivals around the world.
